Planning your Elective Overseas

Our Elective placements are available in developing countries around the world. This is the basic checklist for an Elective placement.

  • Good variety of medical specialties
  • Clear daily timetables
  • Clearly modularised programme
  • Well-qualified supervisor
  • Interpreters available when needed
  • Links with local primary care
  • Opportunity to see traditional medicine (if applicable)
  • Great local food and accommodation
  • Enjoyable social environment

Taking your Elective Placement in Medicine with Projects Abroad

Taking your Medicine Elective overseas with Projects Abroad will be a hugely worthwhile experience. You will be able to work in a medical facility that best suits you. You will often have the opportunity to take part in extra activities such as workshops, outreach programmes and attend seminars with other medical students. This depends on the country and placement you choose.

Our in-country staff will work with you to make sure your placement best suits the medical route you have chosen. You may wish to rotate through departments or focus on your specialism. Whichever it is, we will work with you to ensure the requirements for your elective are met.

You will be working in a developing country so you should expect to see many cases which you may not be familiar with. As many people cannot afford regular medical treatment, you are likely to see some very advanced cases. Some you may find shocking. You will learn a lot from your time on the project and will have many questions for your dedicated qualified supervisor. Take a notepad and pen with you every day so you can take notes on specific cases and treatment methods. You can then discuss these with your supervisor. They will ensure you have access to many case studies for your coursework.

If you are not an elective student or would rather take part in our regular Medicine projects, please go to our Medicine Projects page.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
