Volunteer Medical Elective Placements in Ghana

Gap Year volunteer Medical projects in Ghana

If you wish to do your Elective in Ghana, you will have a choice of a large hospital in a city, or working in a more rural setting. You will shadow one of our supervisors who all speak English and are very experienced at working with western medical and healthcare students. They will be keen to test out your medical knowledge, as well as giving you the benefit of their training and experience.

The hospitals where we work are experienced in working with students on their Medical Electives. You will find them an excellent base for learning and improving your medical skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you wouldn't normally see in Europe and North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis. This experience will be challenging, but will also provide you a wealth of experience and be hugely rewarding.

Our Medical Elective programmes in Ghana are based in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Koforidua and the Akuapem Hills. In Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi you will be based in bustling city hospitals, working with patients who have a wide range of illnesses. In the busy town of Koforidua and in the Akuapem Hills you will work in one of the local hospitals that deal with all types of conditions.

Available Specialisms in Ghana

When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with the Projects Abroad coordinator and the placement supervisor who will be a member of the hospital staff. Most Medical Elective students choose to spend time in a variety of different departments within the hospital, including accident and emergency, paediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physiotherapy and surgery; however, if you are specialising in a particular area of medicine, then we work with our partners to develop a programme that will support your studies.

In all regions, students on Medical Electives also take part in regular medical outreach work, which involves treating children with minor wounds or illnesses from small villages or paying a visit to an orphanage for example. Those on a Medial Elective wanting to specialise in the outreach work can join a full time Public Health project based in Kumasi. Anyone interested in working with HIV and AIDS patients could join our HIV/AIDS control programme based in a hospital in Accra which also includes community outreach work.

Outside of the hospital you will live with local host-families. There is plenty to do in whichever region of Ghana you are located and, as one of our most popular destinations, there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community to travel and spend time with.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
