Medicine Elective Placements in Sri Lanka

Volunteer Medical placements in Sri Lanka

If you choose Sri Lanka as the destination in which to take your Medical Elective, you will gain a great deal of valuable work-experience in a variety of hospital departments. The facilities are generally of a basic standard, but staff are hard working and dedicated. You will learn a lot from your time here.

Projects Abroad is experienced in co-ordinating placements for elective students. Our in-country staff will be on hand to help with any queries or paperwork, and are on hand to support you during your stay. When you are in Sri Lanka, you will be allocated a dedicated supervisor, who will be a qualified doctor. They will be your mentor and will ensure they are available to discuss specific case studies and answer your questions.

They will also ensure that you have the opportunity to learn as much as possible, providing you with a well-rounded understanding of medicine and healthcare in Sri Lanka and in the developing world in general during your placement.

Your exact role within the hospital will be determined by your level of medical experience as well as the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff. The departments you chose to work in will depend upon your chosen specialism. Departments include general medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, maternity, ENT and paediatrics. It is also possible to spend a few days working in neurology, the mortuary, rheumatology and the chest clinic.

There is also opportunities to spend time at a hospital specialising in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Outreach Projects in Sri Lanka

Projects Abroad also organises regular medical outreach work and workshops for our medical elective students and volunteers. This provides you with the opportunity to carry out extremely valuable work in a community based environment. On a monthly basis, you will travel to a local town to carry out basic medical checks on the local community, whilst being supervised and supported by qualified doctors.

There will also be the opportunity to visit schools and centres to give presentations and raise awareness about various healthcare issues. In addition to this, Medical Elective students have the opportunity to attend a monthly seminar held by a local doctor to provide more information about any procedures you have observed at the hospitals and answer any questions you may have.

You will live with a local host family while in Sri Lanka on your Elective project. In your free time you will be able to explore the coast and towns of the region with the Projects Abroad volunteer community.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
