Planning your Elective Overseas

Our Elective placements are available in developing countries around the world. This is the basic checklist for an elective placement.

  • Clear daily timetables
  • Clearly modularised programme
  • Well-qualified supervisor
  • Interpreters available when needed
  • Links with local primary care
  • Opportunity to see traditional medicine (if applicable)
  • Great local food and accommodation
  • Enjoyable social environment

Taking your Elective Placement in Midwifery with Projects Abroad

You will be placed in a medical facility that has a specialist maternity unit, or in a specialist maternity hospital. As you will be working in a developing country, you may find midwifery practice is not what you are used to at home. Approaches to labour also may not be how you have been trained.

Facilities can be under-funded or under-resourced and may lack qualified staff. What you will experience though are highly dedicated and caring staff who work hard to ensure the women are supported as best they can though birth, and that their babies are well cared for.

You will learn about midwifery in a developing country from trained senior staff who will supervise your time in their maternity facility. Your dedicated supervisor will be on hand to discuss specific case studies with you, and answer any of your questions. Staff may be very busy so bring a notebook and pen so you can document your days and discuss this with them later in a focused session.

Staff are keen for you to learn a lot from your time with them and will aim for you to have an enriching and rewarding time while you are in their country.

If you are not an elective student or would rather take part in our regular Midwifery projects, please go to our Midwifery Projects page.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.

If you have any questions please call us on 058-7821521.
