Volunteer Nursing and Midwifery Placements Overseas with Projects Abroad

Medicine & Healthcare, Nursing & Midwifery - Nursing & Midwifery

If you want to take up a voluntary placement overseas as a nurse or a midwife, we have a huge number of different opportunities available. Whether you are hoping to get into the field, a trained professional looking for some work experience, or somewhere in-between, you will have a role to play in one of the hospitals, clinics, orphanages, disabled centres and care homes that we work with. Each placement is tailored, where possible, both to a volunteer's level of experience and their interests.

Volunteering Abroad on a Nursing or Midwifery placement in a Hospital or Clinic

Medicine & Healthcare, Nursing & Midwifery - Nursing & Midwifery in Mongolia

By working on this programme, you will make a real contribution to people's lives. Hospitals and clinics are often understaffed, and you could find yourself assisting with duties such as bandaging, taking blood pressure, and generally caring for the patients. You will find that your new colleagues and the patients appreciate the fact that you have come a long way to offer practical help. If you work as a midwife you are likely to be located in a busy maternity clinic, helping both pre and post-natal patients, and assisting staff with deliveries.

On your first day at work you will be introduced to your supervisor by a local Projects Abroad staff member, and you will agree on a timetable of work. It is very important that you stick to your hours, or give plenty of advanced notice if you wish to change them, because from this moment on you will be part of a team. As with any other employee, your supervisor will be keen to know your skills and level of experience, and the work you find yourself doing will be strongly influenced by this.

Of course a Projects Abroad placement is not all about work. Once you finish for the day there are always other volunteers around to meet up with, and our staff will arrange regular social events and even weekend trips for you to join in on.

Volunteering Abroad in orphanages, day-care centres, disabled centres and care homes

If you are interested in nursing, but would like a less medically-orientated placement, you could be perfect for our Care Projects. We have volunteers working in all sorts of capacities, providing support, guidance and a huge amount of love for some of the neediest people in the third world. "I have been living and working in Sri Lanka for six weeks now and I work at the Chandrasekara Home in Moratuwa. Each day at work brings new challenges - and rewards - experiences and adventures I will never forget. It is very hard work, both physically and mentally, but I am working with some of the kindest, most special children not just in Sri Lanka, but anywhere."
Ruth Malthouse, Volunteer in Sri Lanka
