Volunteering as a teacher in Samoa will give you a great way to get involved in the local community. You can gain invaluable teaching work experience without any previous qualifications, and you are not required to have undergone TEFL training.

Whether you are coming to volunteering during your gap year, career break or an extended holiday, the impact you have on the lives of your students will be obvious and long-lasting. You will also be part of a much larger volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the wider community.

Samoa is becoming increasingly urbanised and speaking good English is essential for getting a good job, both in the booming tourist industry and in other areas of business.

Teach in Samoa with Projects Abroad

School children

Projects Abroad is based in Apia, the capital of Samoa on the island of Upolu. Volunteers work in primary and secondary schools in and around Apia. We also offer Teaching placements in one of the more rural villages. Please see our Community Project page for more information.

English is one of Samoa’s official languages, (Samoan is the other) and it is a major educational goal to make all Samoans bilingual. All lessons are taught in English by midway through primary school.

The class sizes can often be large in Apia, with up to 65 students in a class, so your help will be appreciated. As a volunteer teacher you will often start by working alongside the local Samoan staff to help improve conversational English, as well as assisting with other subjects in the curriculum. Through assisting with lessons and introducing fun and interactive ways of learning, like games and songs you can improve the student’s enthusiasm and develop their confidence. They are sure to be interested in you and your life, and you can take advantage of this to get them talking about a wide variety of topics.

Volunteers who are happy to also teach some sports, particularly cricket or rugby will be in demand and if you have any other interests or subjects you would like to teach – such as maths, science, IT or art, we can match you to a school where you can incorporate these skills.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Samoa Teaching Management Plan.

The Projects Abroad team in Samoa organise regular workshops for our teaching volunteers. The workshops will provide you with an important overview of the Samoan system of education and the background of the school where you’re working. You will also receive advice regarding maintaining discipline in the classroom, lesson planning and will discuss ideas for activities to carry out at your teaching placement.

Volunteers taking part in our teaching programme in Samoa will also be given the opportunity to take part in our exciting new Global Shark Campaign, which is taking place in 18 countries in 4 continents. As education is so important in conservation we are calling for the help of our teaching volunteers! This help will involve implementing our special shark conservation curriculum to children of a wide range of ages in schools around the world. This curriculum aims to raise the awareness of the importance of sharks and  reverse the negative connotations associated with these animals. The teaching methods range from art activities for the younger children to conservation debates for the older students!
